When Mission Success Matters Most, Leaders Expand the Circle of Ideas

Several years ago, I anticipated that the political backlash surrounding traditional DEI programs would create unintended consequences for organizations competing in increasingly complex environments. What I did not anticipate was how quickly the underlying principle behind our trademark Diversity Equals Innovation® would be demonstrated by one of the very institutions at the center of that national conversation: the United States military.
Recent efforts to solicit ideas from military personnel across all ranks reflect an important leadership principle. When the mission is critical, organizations seek the best ideas, not just the highest-ranking voices.
The soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, Guardians, and civilians closest to the mission often possess insights that cannot be seen from headquarters. That isn't politics. It is Human-Centered Leadership.
At Concordant Healthcare Solutions, we refer to this as Performance-Driven Diversity™.
Performance-Driven Diversity is not based on quotas or compliance; it is intentionally leveraging differences in:
• Experience
• Perspective
• Knowledge
• Problem-solving approaches
• Cultural understanding
• Front-line expertise
We use our Human-centered Leadership Model to enhance leadership skills required to build systems where every individual is respected, every perspective can be heard, and every idea is evaluated on its potential to improve outcomes and not on the title of the person presenting it. This current process aligns with how history consistently shows that breakthrough innovations rarely emerge from homogeneous thinking. They emerge when leaders intentionally create environments where diverse perspectives challenge assumptions and generate better solutions.
Whether the objective is improving military readiness, transforming healthcare, or creating competitive advantage in business, the leadership principle remains remarkably consistent:
The broader the range of informed perspectives, the greater the potential for innovation and superior performance.
That is why we've believed for years that...
Diversity Equals Innovation®
Not because diversity is an end in itself. But because when diverse perspectives are intentionally harnessed through human-centered leadership, innovation becomes the engine that drives exceptional performance.
